Adam and Eve
The well known story of the creation of Earth in the Christian and Jewish worlds is well known for being the first "rebellion" or weakness of humanity. Genesis begins with God creating the heavens and the earth and all that inhabit it and then finally creating man in his own image. Man, which was named Adam, was pretty good but he was lonely, so God fashioned the first woman Eve from his rib (naturally). This unfortunately gave biblical precedence to the fact that men were superior to women in a biological sense, which prevailed for hundreds of years. As Eve is seduced by the serpent into disobeying God, even more blame is laid at the foot of the woman. (even though adam tries the fruit as well later)
The story of Adam and Eve is known as one of the greatest falls from grace. From having all the beauty of the garden of Eden and then throwing it all away, and being banished from eternity. It is a stark reminder of what will happen if one goes against God. Thus Eden has come to symbolize a sort of paradise lost. Of something that could've made Adam and Eve happy, but instead became the bane of their existence.
