Villanelle

Do not go gentle into that good night by Dylan Thomas is personally the best example of the villanelle of the three poems. The repetition of "Do not go gentle into that good night," flows seamlessly from stanza to stanza. The Waking by Theodore Roethke often had a forced feel to it, as the repetition of "I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow," doesn't flow as nicely at times as Thomas' did. One Art by Elizabeth Bishop is actually the one I enjoyed most of the three. She repeats the line "The art of losing isn't hard to master," and while it doesn't always flow perfectly, it is a bold statement that commands attention and makes the reader stop and think.
