Villanelle

In a brief read of these three poems, it seems that Dylan Thomas uses the structure of the villanelle to best express his message. This is probably because the nature of the poem's theme is to be urged upon the reader, as if the speaker is shouting, impelling us to not die quietly, and this property lends itself nicely to the brief, repetitive structure of the villanelle. I think that On Art is the next best, as it's message is also easily expressed in the villanelle's format. Although I enjoyed The Waking just as much as the other two, I feel that, while it is a beautiful poem, it doesn't stay as true to the classic villanelle as the others. I believe that forcing repetition upon Waking would have detracted from the poem, and the alterations made to the villanelle structure were for the best.
